Three Inquisitions were operating in modern Catholic Europe: the Spanish, the Portuguese—with their corresponding tribunals in their dominions in America and Asia—and the Romans. The Spanish Inquisition had a district in the Kingdom of Sicily, which, as Fernando Ciaramitaro solidly and eruditely demonstrates, deserves a separate study. He discusses with countless authors in a rich critical apparatus that makes it very clear that Ciaramitaro is an excellent example of the profession of history and historiography. The author provides an exhaustive and erudite review of the works produced around the Inquisition for the Spanish case and, of course, for the Sicilian case. The book is divided into two main chapters, the first dedicated to reviewing the historiography surrounding the Spanish Holy Office and the development of this judicial body throughout the Empire.
